Suspension Upgrades

One of the mk2's biggest downfalls is it's lack of aftermarket support for nearly all things, whether it's performance or body panel replacement. Unlike it's older cousin, the Corolla, the Celica Supra didn't start becoming popular in modern times until after the retro car scene re-emerged. Still, this popularity based on being "rare and old" has done little to boost it's aftermarket support in anyway, and there is only ONE company that caters to these cars, and that is RaptorRacing.

That said, there are still some performance pieces floating around the internet that cover what RR does not make for us, like sway bars for example.

ADDCO is the only company that still provides front and rear sway bars.

CUSCO still makes a front strut tower bar and *might* still make the rear. Be sure to select the appropriate link for MA61/GA61

LOWERING THE SUSPENSION:

Back in the day, we had a couple options for lowering the car. Eibach had two sets of springs, Pro and Sport, and Suspension Techniques also had a set available. Both only lowered the car about 3/4" and they are now both discontinued. From time to time you can find a set for sale on eBay or the celicasupra.com forum for sale section. However, the only brand new springs you can buy today, are Dobinson from RaptorRacing

The most appropriate way to lower your car, and have ADJUSTABILITY, are coilovers. They are a must have for a smooth ride you can slam or race, though they are a bit expensive, so start saving!

Currently available coilover kits are T3, Stance, BC, etc

If you can't save money, or your car is a daily beater/drift missile that's just a toy until you "get something better", you could always just cut your springs. CUT YOUR SPRINGS? WHAT IS THIS HERESY??? People think cut springs and automatically see "ricer bounce", which is definitely a legitimate concern if you are a person who only reads half the directions.

The issue with ricer bounce mod is not changing the struts and shocks. The original equipment shocks are meant to travel a certain distance, and once you change the geometry, those shocks are now working out of their boundaries; hence RICER BOUNCE. Car is too low, shock travels too far, and BAM it looks and feels terrible. This can all be avoided by replacing the shocks at the time you have cut your springs with shorter ones.

MR2 rear struts are commonly used for MA61 front, Isuzu Trooper shocks are used in the rear, among several other creative choices. I myself have the Bilsteins from a Trooper, which are amazing!

As for cutting the springs themselves; a few rules:

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damages you may incur to yourself, others or your car by not having basic common sense or mechanical skills. Get a spring compressor. Get safety glasses. Don't be an idiot.

NEVER EVER HEAT THE SPRINGS. EVER. DO NOT USE A TORCH. The steel will lose it's integrity and warp. Ask me how I know.

General rule of thumb is to cut ONE HALF COIL, reinstall, do some heavy driving to settle suspension and determine how much lower you want to go. Always cut ONE HALF COIL at a time, until satisfied. Again, if you do not replace shocks with shorter stroke ones, your car WILL bounce and feel terrible once it has dropped more than 1" from factory.
