My dashboard had been fried before I got the car, in September 2007. Several very deep cracks in the vinyl. Not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a recover or replacement ($100+ in shipping alone) I finally decided to remove it, strip it, and paint it. I still need to fill in some gaps with window seal, but this is where I am currently (click for larger pics)
