Cylinder block prep consists of plugging as much as possible to prevent debris falling into block. And scraping and cleaning the gasket mating surface with various tools like razors, plastic scrapers, etc. I try not to use power tools or anything that could possibly warp the edge of the cylinder bore, creating more issues. It's very tedious but it works. Then I vacuumed out any debris that fell into the cylinders.
